Leo Handrik Baekeland
Leo Handrik Baekeland is the inventor of Bakelite and photographic paper. He invented photographic paper in 1893 and Bakelite in 1907. Leo Baekeland was born in Ghent, Belgium on November 14 1863. Baekeland was a successful child in school, he was the first student in his class to earn a scholarship to the university of Ghent, at the age of 16. Eventually at the age of 21 he received a very high doctorate degree.
Later on in years in 1891 Leo Beakeland was able to upgrade the manufacturing of Volex invented by Joseph Eder. Which then led him to inventing photographic paper, he sold his invention to George Eastmen for one million dollars.
Now Leo was a millionaire, he had his own laboratory which Leo and his assistant Nathaniel Thurlow was experimenting with different things, when they came across mixing Carbolic Acid with Formaldehyde that when they figured out a new invention that is used for millions of things we still use today, Bakelite. Leo Baekeland won many awards for his amazing inventions such as Perkin Medal, Franklin Medal, John Scott Legacy Medal and Premium.
Leo Baekeland was never married and had no children. He died on February 23, 1944 in Beacon New York. Leo's grave was specially made by Bakelite plastc.
