What is Bakelite?
Bakelite (Polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride) is a strong plastic that is able to resist heat without melting. Bakelite is one of the first synthetic plastics ever invented. Scientist say polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride is the longest scientific word. Bakelite is a very popular plastic that is used for many things like jewellery, cutlery, radios and electronic devices.
How has Bakelite changes the everyday lives of people who use it?
If we did not have Bakelite our world would be very different to what it is now. We wouldn't know as much knowledge as we do today and the technology would be very different, there might not even be technology? Bakelite has changed this world a lot. for an example the light bulb socket that holds the bulb is made from Bakelite, if we didn't have that we wouldn't have light.
Why has Bakelite proven to be such a useful item?
Bakelite a reliable product for many useful things, it is used for bits and parts for lots of things we use to clean, transport or contact e.g washing machines particles, plastic car/bus/train/plane/bike bits and telephones or radios. Also Bakelite is easy to get and it cheap, it is heat proof and it can be moulded into the shape you need .
Will Bakelite continue to change peoples lives into the future?
Yes, Bakelite will definitely change peoples lives in the future. It is used for many thing that help humans, scientist will upgrade the use of Bakelite and advance the technology for its use. If there was no bakelite in this world, it would be a different world/future.
Who invented Bakelite and what led to the discovery?
The invention of Bakelite was an accident the inventor, Leo Hendrik Beakeland didn't intend on inventing anything at this stage, he was a millionaire with his last invention. He owned a science lab and with his assistant, Nathaniel Thurlow was experimenting new things. They created Bakelite by mixing Carbolic Acid (phenol) with Formaldehyde, that's when they created the worlds first plastics.
